There are different roads to Kyparissi, but we suggest this one.
From Athens, take the E94 national road to Korinth and then the E65 national road to Tripoli.
Pass Tripoli and continue on the E65 road. Take the Lefktro Exit to Sparta (A71) which ends at a
roundabout near Skoura and Geraki.
If you want to break your journey to Kyparissi, Geraki is a good place for an overnight stop and
you can visit the ancient hilltop castle.
From Geraki continue through Agios Dimitrios all the way to a junction just before Kremasti.
Turn right at the sign for Xarakas and Kyparissi. Continue until this road comes to a junction with
a church on the left.
Turn left and stay on this road until you reach Kyparissi. The last few miles of this road must be
the most spectacular drive in Europe, with towering cliffs overhead on one side and a 1,000
metre drop to the sea on the other. Have your camera ready!
When you reach Kyparissi drive down towards the sea until you come to a fork in the road. Take
the left fork to Metropolis. Kyfanta is just before the next junction, on the right hand side after
the supermarket.
Distance: 298 km , Duration: 4h, Tolls: Yes
ATTENTION! There is no gas station in Kyparissi. Make sure you fill your tank. Last gas station is in
Geraki, 50km away
Kyparissi has large beaches with crystal clear water. ‘Megali Ammos’, stretches out in front of the
village and is a two-minute walk from the hotel. It has been awarded a Blue Flag and offers excellent
snorkelling, diving and fishing. The beach at Aghia Kyriaki, a five-minute drive through picturesque
olive groves. There is nearby a restaurant where you can enjoy a cold beer or a full meal and a
breathtaking view.
Kyparissi has several family-run tavernas which are open for most of the year, and serve traditional
local food at affordable prices. Lobster with spaghetti is a favoured delicacy. The tavernas will also
cook any fish that you catch.
The village has a bakery, a supermarket, a butcher’s, coffee shops and bars. There is also a
playground with a five-a-side football pitch and basketball hoops.
There are also many scenic drives in the area. One lovely day trip is to the wonderfully preserved,
fortified Byzantine town of Monemvasia, a 75-minute drive from Kyparissi. Cars are excluded from
the old town. Entry is through a massive medieval gate and you can walk through the cobbled streets
and up to the hilltop castle.
You can stop at the estuary town of Gerakas for lunch at one of the restaurants that line the harbor.
Gerakas is one of the oldest towns in the region and there is a walk to the site of an ancient acropolis.
Another possible trip is to Kremasti, a beautiful mountain village, a 30-minute drive through remote
and beautiful terrain. If you wish you can continue north to Kosmas, the highest village in the region
and a 90 minute drive from Kyparissi.
From Kremasti you can explore various routes by car, not all of them on paved roads, and roam the
villages of the Parnon mountains (Kounoupia, Mari etc) until you reach picturesque Leonidio.
Further afield lies Sparti where you can visit the olive museum and the ruined Byzantine city of
Mystra.
